Phoneme Awareness Domain

The Phoneme Awareness Domain is assessed by a series of five tasks in the TEST2r battery.  These tasks represent increasing levels of difficulty for the child.
Task 3 - Phonetic Spelling

Task 12 - Initial Phoneme Deletion
Task 13 - Final Phoneme Deletion: Real Word Remaining
Task 14 - Final Phoneme Deletion: Non-Word Remaining
Task 15 - Non-Word Reading

Before children can be expected to successfully complete phoneme deletion tasks they must first develop phoneme awareness.  Only when they can recognise the different sounds that make up a word can they be expected to progress to an ability to manipulate these sounds and complete initial and final phoneme deletion tasks.  If a child evidences problems in phonemic segmentation, the first interventions should be based in phonemic awareness.

Interventions for Rhyme and Alliteration, and Letter Sound Correspondence skills are relevant to this area.
