Rapid Automatised Naming (RAN) Digits

Both RAN Digits and RAN Objects are tasks that involve a wide range of skills.  They relate to Long-Term Memory and the cognitive processes involved in recalling names and categories.  They measure the speed of lexical access that the child is capable of, and as such it must be ensured that the child has the necessary vocabulary to complete the task.  Thus the first step in intervention in this domain may lie in vocabulary building.

The Florida Centre for Reading Research provides resources in vocabulary building and categories.

Visual Verbal Interventions will also be useful in this area.  These include those already mentioned in the Visual Verbal Intervention Group.
  • The Florida Centre for Reading Research provides a simple instructional resource, in relation to Letter Sound Correspondence for teachers or parents.  Further activities and ideas are available in this Phonics Activites PDF.

The speed with which the task can be accurately completed relies on the child having access to the vocabulary necessary to respond, and also to them being able to recall the correct word from their long-term memories.  This necessitates some interventions in relation to improving memory.
  • Childhood 101 is a parenting blog which includes some ideas for short term memory games for children.
