Timed Rhyme Generation

Note: Timed Rhyme Generation is a measure of the child's capacity both to recognise rhyme, and also to generate rhymes independently of any supporting environmental cues.  As such it is a more demanding task, relying on both rhyme recognition and long-tern memory to complete.  There are two main issues in satisfactorily completing this task.  One is the ability to recognise and generate a rhyme, and the other is to do correctly it under pressure of time.

There is a visible trade off in all time sensitive tasks, where accuracy may be diminished in order to complete the task more quickly.  As a teacher, it is your role to ensure the child's understanding of rhyme, and mastery of the ability to rhyme, before expecting them to automate this task to enable them to complete it accurately under the timed condition.  In brief, understanding and automaticity are prerequisites for the successful completion of this task.

Interventions relating to rhyme recognition oddity are relevant in improving performance in this task.

The Florida Centre for Reading Research offers this instructional resource for teachers and parents, and also a range of worksheets and ideas for relevant interventions.
